Alabama Kidnapper being Characterized as ‘Survivalist’

While a three-day standoff in Alabama has the nation’s attention, media outlets are busy labeling the suspect an extremist veteran prepper who “did not trust the government.”

The suspected kidnapper, Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, is said to have an ornery disposition by his neighbors own accounts. Reportedly, he’s been mean to children, is “standoffish” and beat a dog nearly to death. On Tuesday, Dykes allegedly killed a bus driver and took a five-year-old boy hostage to an underground bunker on his property.

Will the mainstream media use this to go after guns…and preppers?

You betcha.

According to the New York Times, a sheriff’s office investigator told the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) that stand-off suspect Jimmy Lee Dykes is “a Vietnam veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress who “did not trust the government.”

News and gossip site Gawker ran the headline, “Hostage-Taking ‘Doomsday Prepper’ Passes 30th Hour of Bunker Standoff with Cops” and said that the situation is made all the worse “since Dykes is a survivalist,” because “his bunker is well-stocked with food and other necessary items.”

Both the New York Daily News and Fox News say Dykes’ neighbors described him as “’very paranoid,’ anti-government and possibly a ‘Doomsday prepper.’”

But perhaps the most questionable indictment comes from our friends over at the SPLC who ran with the headline, “Police: Hostage Taker in Alabama Standoff Has ‘Anti-America’ Views.”

Not surprising, Obama administration mouthpiece NBC also states a “source” told them that Dykes was distrustful of government and held “anti-American views.”

Have we covered all the fringe right-wing lunatic bases so far? Let’s see, he is allegedly a distraught “paranoid” veteran with PTSD who is a “doomsday prepper” and who has an “underground bunker” full of “storable foods.” He vigilantly patrolled his private property and is obviously pro-Second Amendment since he carried a shotgun.

Did we miss one? Ah, yes. We should soon be finding out that he was an Alex Jones fan and regular visitor to Infowars.com.

For years Alex has warned that they are getting ready to demonize the Second Amendment, survivalists, patriots, and veterans who stand up for the Constitution and their property rights. We are not condoning what Mr. Dykes is engaged in, however, we know where this will lead.

Will anyone who wants to install a bunker in their backyard, or wants to buy storable food be labelled suspect for such activities because of this one psycho’s antics?

You betcha.

A commenter on the SPLC site also brought up some interesting points:

“…Since he ‘didn’t socialize or have any contact with anybody,’ how did they know he had PTSD? How did the neighbors connect him with any movement?
“His contacts with the law have been individual contacts of a violent person, not the kind that connect a person to a movement or terrorist organization.
“How does this connect to a national audience? There are people out there who are unusual and violent in every community. There is, to the best of my knowledge no organization that binds them.”

Such a story could not come at a more opportune time for the gun grabbing lobby who has been moving at light speed to push through various Second Amendment restrictions.

In the past, Infowars has warned that the “war on terror” will be re-directed from fighting Al-Qaeda to focus on Americans who are opposed to big government, a claim that has been repeatedly backed up by multiple reports.

In light of this new development, will veterans be blanket-characterized as potential terrorists and be denied their firearms at the slightest hint of a mental disorder?

You betcha.
