The last time we heard from Michael Weinstein, his
Military Religious Freedom Foundation was complaining about the phrase “so help
me God” in the U.S. Air Force Academy Honor Oath. Following complaints by
Weinstein and his anti-Christian organization, the Air Force decided to make the phrase optional for cadets.
Now Weinstein is targeting an Air Force Christmas
nativity scene. Weinstein says displaying a plastic Jesus demonstrates prejudice
against other religions and is illegal under Air Force Instruction 1-1 section
2.11.
“This becomes an issue of command endorsement of
Christianity particularly since it was right next to the Christmas tree, there
was a Christmas lighting that was just about to happen,” Weinstein told WLTX in Columbia, South Carolina. “We commended the Air Force
for how quickly they moved after we contacted them at the Pentagon.”
Following his call to the Pentagon, the
traditional Christmas scene was removed within two hours. An Air Force
spokeswoman said the scene was preferential and the military is dedicated to
showing respect for all religions.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation was established in 2005 for the purpose of opposing evangelical Christians in positions of power within the military. Weinstein, the organization’s founder, has described targets of the foundation as “a small subset of evangelical Christianity that’s called premilliennial, dispensational, reconstructionist, dominionist, fundamentalist, evangelical Christianity or just Dominionist Christianity.”
Mr. Weinstein characterizes evangelical Christians in the military as “incredibly well-funded gangs of fundamentalist Christian monsters who terrorize their fellow Americans by forcing their weaponized and twisted version of Christianity upon their helpless subordinates in our nation’s armed forces.”
